How time-zone overlap works with Pakistan

Pakistan is GMT+5. Here's exactly how much of your day overlaps, and how to run a team across it.

The raw numbers

Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5. Relative to US zones: about 9 hours ahead of Pacific, 10 ahead of Eastern-equivalent in standard time. That sounds like a lot — but a Pakistani engineer's late afternoon/evening lands squarely on a US morning.

Where the overlap lands

  • US East Coast: ~3–5 hours of live overlap if the team works afternoon–evening PKT.
  • US West Coast: ~2–4 hours, best in your morning.
  • Europe: 3–4 hours, very comfortable.
  • Use the timezone overlap tool to see your exact window.

How to run it well

  • One daily standup inside the overlap window.
  • Async by default — clear written updates, PRs, and Loom-style walkthroughs.
  • Batch reviews and questions instead of pinging live all day.

The point

You don't need 8 hours of overlap. You need a few reliable hours for standups and reviews, and good async habits for the rest. That's exactly how we schedule teams.
